Hi,

Has anyone’s spouse ever become suicidal after you’ve said that you want a divorce? Would you stay in the relationship to keep them safe?
If not, how would you handle the guilt of causing these feelings?

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for getting in touch with amicable.

We’re very sorry to hear about your situation.

If your partner is considering suicide, we would recommend that you make an immediate appointment with your GP. There are additional resources available like the Samaritans who have a direct 24/7 helpline available, please call 116 123 for help.

Divorce is an incredibly stressful and emotionally charged time, and its experience is also unique to each couple. If you've initiated the divorce, it’s likely that you’re further ahead on the emotional journey of ‘getting over’ the breakup while your ex-partner has only just started grieving your relationship. Here’s a helpful blog & podcast episode that explores the emotional journey of divorce. And here are some tips on managing your mental health during this undeniably challenging time.

Best wishes, Tatiana
