Just watched the spousal maintenance recording and wanted to hear from people who have actual experience with this, pros and cons etc.
Is it possible to pay extra upfront as part of a settlement to basically buy out future spousal maintenance? So instead of paying monthly for years, one person just pays a larger lump sum at the time and that’s it, no ongoing payments after.
It sounds like it would make things simpler for both sides but I’m not sure how it works in reality. Are courts generally ok with this or is it not that common. And how do people usually work out what a fair lump sum would be, given things can change over time.
Has anyone dealt with this before or seen it done in practice? just trying to get a better sense of how it actually plays out.
Thanks
