Our team of Divorce Specialists are experienced in working with all forms of diverse families in our co-parenting services and more widely in our divorce and separation services.

It’s important for any child to have their identity celebrated in every way. For LGBTQ+ children or children with LGBTQ+ parents, there is an ever-growing pool of resources ranging from TV Series to books, blogs and podcasts.

We have put together a short list of useful resources to get you started.

TV Series

HeartStopper

This uplifting romantic coming-of-age story gives perspective to modern-day teenagers in the rainbow community as they navigate their way through secondary school. A positive story that provides useful insight for all children and their parents. HeartStopper is based on a graphic novel by Alice Osman and is available to watch on Netflix.

The Fosters

Following a lesbian couple and their multi-racial, blended family, The Fosters is an excellent show for children to see that there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ family makeup. The Fosters is available to watch on Disney+.

Books

BookTrust has put together a shortlist of picture books for young children that show and celebrate diverse families. The full list can be found here.

Who would be best to speak to in relation to child custody and housing? I'm separated from my ex-partner who is birth mum and has primary care for our children. I have 50% custody but I'm only entitled to a one bed property through the council as I'm not primary carer, in receipt of child benefit and I don't have a shared custody order. Without a shared custody order, I'm only entitled to a one bed property with three children. The solicitor said that the courts will not entertain such a request to simply appease the council housing team. My ex will not help. Is there anything I can do? It's making me feel like I'm not a significant parent and is not something I was aware that could be a problem.
