What's included in the service?
- Specialist - your own dedicated Specialist to facilitate the session
- Session - a 90-minute joint session
- Parenting plan template - a parenting plan template you can use to document your agreements. Parents can complete this during or after the session. Your Specialist can also do this for you in a separate follow-up session.
What's not included?
- MIAM - this service isn't a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). You would only need an MIAM if you plan on going through the court. This service is an alternative solution to reaching an agreement outside of the court.
- Multiple guests- the session takes place between the Specialist and parents. If both parents agree that they would like another guest present, this must be pre-agreed with the Specialist and the additional guest must not speak during the session.
- Unsafe situations - This service is not appropriate if there are risks of harm to your child (such as allegations of sexual or physical abuse), if you’ve experienced domestic violence, or if there’s an imbalance of power within the relationship (e.g., due to a disability or language comprehension issues). If any of these concerns apply, we can help you find appropriate support.
- Independent legal advice or specialist tax advice
FAQs
Who is amicable?
We’re the trusted legal service for separating couples. Our specialists help couples separate, reach a fair financial agreement and decide arrangements for children without using separate solicitors.
Do we have to agree on everything before starting the service?
No. Many parents come to us with different views or worries. Our service is designed to help you have those conversations constructively, reduce conflict and work towards arrangements that put your children’s wellbeing first.
Is this service legally binding?
The agreements you reach about your children aren’t legally binding in the same way as a court order. However, we help you create a clear, practical parenting plan that both parents understand and can stick to. If you later need a legally binding order, we can explain your options.
Can we use this service if we’re not getting divorced?
Yes. You don’t need to be married or going through divorce proceedings. The service is suitable for any separating parents in England and Wales who want support agreeing child arrangements.
